We reviewed 1 quality statement in this key question in person-centred care. People told us long-standing staff members knew their needs well but raised concerns about the knowledge of newer or agency staff. Staff showed an awareness of person-centred approaches. However, they told us they were busy and therefore, not always able to provide person-centred care to people. This was reflective of what people told us. We found care plans did not always have person-centred information available. The provider had recently moved to a new electronic care planning system and an action plan was in place to ensure people’s records accurately reflected person-centred information.

This service scored 6 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Person-centred Care

Score: 2

People told us long-standing staff members knew them well and their likes and dislikes. However, people raised concerns about new or agency staff not knowing their needs as well. Most people told us they could vary their timetable and get up and go to bed when they want. There were mixed reports about access to bathing or showering with some people saying choice was not offered daily. One person told us they had “not been offered a bath since coming to the home.” However. another person told us staff were “accommodating when they wanted a bath.” People and relatives provided positive feedback about the food and drinks on offer. People told us they could eat in their rooms or in the dining room and there were lots of snacks available. A few people told us there were not enough activities available. However, most people and relatives praised the activities in the home especially the trips outside in the minibus. People also told us they felt staff didn’t have time to sit and chat with them because they were busy.

Staff showed an awareness of person-centred approaches. Some staff demonstrated their passion for people’s needs being met in a person-centred way. However, they told us they were not always able to do this due to time constraints. Leaders told us they were going through a culture change within the service and person-centred care was their priority. They were looking at how staff could be deployed more effectively within the service.

We observed 1 person in a wheelchair regularly accessing the outside area to smoke. Staff assisted and greeted them when they entered and exited the building. There were no activities available in the morning due to a staff absence. However, we observed an activity taking place in the afternoon which some people participated in and enjoyed. The provider gave us evidence to support the number of activities in the home. We observed staff were busy and task-focused and therefore not able to spend time with people. The observations were in line with what people told us.
