About the service Canonbury Residential Home is a residential care home providing personal care to eight people at the time of the inspection. The service can support up to thirteen people.
People’s experience of using this service and what we found
Risks relating to the environment were not always assessed and mitigated, and an effective audit system was not in place in relation to all areas of the home. This placed people at risk of harm. The registered manager responded immediately from our inspection and was developing a system to oversee fire and gas safety, medicines and legionella, where shortfalls were found.
People were supported by staff who were aware of safeguarding adults’ procedures and had received regular training on this topic. A senior staff member said, “All staff know the correct process and route in the event of a safeguarding concern. We do work based training and then the registered manager follows up with us afterwards to check our understanding.”
People, relatives and staff felt well informed and involved in service delivery. They said there was open communication between themselves and the registered manager. The registered manager was formalising this process of further improve the potential to share feedback and experience.
People and their relatives spoke positively about the quality of care provided. Staff treated people with kindness, dignity and respect. People were supported to maintain their independence and empowered to make choices and decisions about their care.
People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

Rating at last inspection
This service was registered with us on 28 July 2021 and this is the first inspection.
Why we inspected
This was a planned inspection based on the service being newly registered.
We looked at infection prevention and control measures under the Safe key question. We look at this in all care home inspections even if no concerns or risks have been identified. This is to provide assurance that the service can respond to COVID-19 and other infection outbreaks effectively.
Enforcement and Recommendations
We are mindful of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our regulatory function. This meant we took account of the exceptional circumstances arising as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic when considering what enforcement action was necessary and proportionate to keep people safe as a result of this inspection. We will continue to monitor the service and will take further action if needed.
We have identified breaches in relation to regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) and regulation 17 (good governance) at this inspection.
Please see the action we have told the provider to take at the end of this report.
Follow up
We will request an action plan from the provider to understand what they will do to improve the standards of quality and safety. We will work alongside the provider and local authority to monitor progress. We will continue to monitor information we receive about the service, which will help inform when we next inspect.
