During an inspection in response to concerns
Our observations showed, and people who use the service confirmed, that the staff ensure that people are treated with dignity and respect. One person said 'it's very nice here, they [staff] always respect me, it's not like being at home, but I do like it here'. A relative also commented that the respect afforded to people who use the service had improved significantly and said 'yes from what I have seen it's fine now, but prior to the Acting Manager coming here no, not all that sure, but it's fine now'.
There was a significant improvement in the range of social activities being provided by a recently employed Social Activities Coordinator. We saw people participating in activities such as knitting, movement to music, music therapy, playing board games and enjoying reminiscence therapy.
We observed care staff encouraging people who use the service to have a well presented and well balanced diet, and people who needed assistance to eat were helped in a kind and considerate manner.
Through observations and conversations with people who use the service, and their relatives, it was established that people felt the staffing levels were sufficient to meet people's needs. A member of staff said 'the staffing levels are good now, no problems really, we can be very busy at times but at other times, such as in the afternoons, it's quiet'.
Relatives told us the service has improved significantly and said it was down to the new Acting Manager. Staff also commented that the care provision at the home had improved significantly and stated 'In the past it was the care staff who dictated to the qualified nurses, but all that's changed, yes it's much better now. Staff morale is lifting, it's so much better for our residents now. We had all lost our focus on what we were here to do, but now we are all more focused and we all contribute as a team, it's the new manager, he's very good, firm but fair'.
