During an inspection looking at part of the service
As at our previous inspection, we observed staff were consistently caring and kind to the people who used the service and got on well with them.
As at our previous inspection, we observed staff were consistently caring and kind to the people who used the service and got on well with them.
The staff were caring and seemed to be genuinely concerned about the welfare of the people who used the service. However they lacked the training required to provide a specialised service to people with learning disabilities, some of whom are non-verbal and/or diagnosed with autism.
A new care plan/risk assessment format had been introduced. This provided a good basic structure for staff to set out people's care needs and how they are to be met. However key information had been omitted, for example care plans/risk assessments relating to behaviour that challenges us and personal safety
Since we last inspected improvements have been made to the premises. The lounge and some bedrooms have been redecorated and the kitchen floor covering replaced. Adaptations have been carried out to make the home more suitable for people with limited mobility. However further improvements are needed to upgrade the premises and satisfy health and safety requirements .
At the start of our inspection most people were out at day or community centres. One person had chosen to stay at the home with a member of staff. Who made lunch for then. They were given a choice and the meal was freshly made.
Later in the day some people returned form their daytime activities. Our expert by experience observed the staff treated them with dignity and respect and they appeared content at Baba Sawan Lodge.
We spoke with two staff members. Both had a good understanding of the health and social care needs of the people they cared for, and also their like/dislikes, hobbies and interests. We observed that staff got on well with the people they cared for and were warm and friendly in their approach to them.
We inspected the premises and identified a number of areas that were potentially hazardous to the people from a health and safety point of view. In addition some areas of the premises were in a poor state of decoration and repair and in need of improvement.
