Independence, choice and control

Staff supported people to be independent and encouraged people to do as much as they could for themselves. One member of staff said, “We support 1 person has a condition that means they are unsteady when walking. We encourage them to do as much as they can and we usually just observe so they can keep their independence,”

We saw staff supporting people to be independent with meals who supported them with verbal encouragement. We observed some people being supported to make decisions about their day-to-day choices such as what to eat, where to sit and what activities to take part in. and mobilising around the home.

People confirmed they were encouraged and supported to be involved in the care panning process and empowered to make choices about their care, ensuring their independence was maintained. One person told us, “I do feel listened to, and the girls seem to value what I have to say They do help me to keep my independence as much as I can. They are very supportive and encouraging."

People’s communication needs were assessed before a care package commenced to ensure they were fully supported to understand their rights and able to make decisions about their care. Care plans contained up to date information about people’s needs including their choices and preferences. They contained information for staff guidance to promote people’s independence in areas such as mobility and managing their medicines.
