During a routine inspection

Everyone who lived in the home said they were very happy. We found that people were treated as individuals and from our observations throughout the day, it was clear that staff knew people well and encouraged them to make their own decisions. People looked supported and well cared for. One person said "Everyone supports me I love living here". People who lived in the home were able to lock their bedroom door with a key which promoted people's choice, independence and privacy.

We looked at the care records for three people. Throughout each record was evidence that external agencies and services were involved in people's care and treatment, for example the Social work team, Psychiatry and Chiropody. A care worker told us that appointment letters were sent directly to people. The staff explained what the appointment was for and would then support people to attend the appointment.

We saw that there was a clear system in place for monitoring and auditing the stocks of medicines. We spoke with one care worker who explained what they would in situations such as, medication errors, what to do if a person refused their medicine and awareness of the side effects of some medication.

The three people who lived in the home had completed a pictorial questionnaire. They were asked many questions for example, about the support they received, the food and the activities they took part in. All of the responses were positive. People said they had no complaints.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out an inspection on 4 May 2012 where people told us that staff were very helpful. Everyone living in the home had a part-time job which they told us they enjoyed. One person who worked in a library said, "I love my job". We saw that people had many opportunities to take part in community activities such as going to the local swimming pool or to the pub in the evening.

We observed staff treating people with sensitivity and respect. Staff listened and responded to people, supporting them to make decisions and choices about their lifestyles. People said they were happy living in the home and with the support they received from staff.

The home had a comfortable environment with a large well kept garden for people to sit in. People enjoyed having their own room and space and had personalised them with items of their choice.

Staff encouraged people to participate in the daily routines of the home, such as, cleaning their room, washing up, making tea or helping with the weekly shop. Relatives and visitors to the home were very positive about the care people received.

On the 4 May 2012 although staff were positive about the support they received when carrying out their work, we found that not all staff received the same level of support. Some appraisals had been missed. Recording of supervision was not always being routinely done. We asked the provider to make improvements to outcome 14.

On the 6 July 2012, we carried out an inspection of 13 Greenway Park which is part of Cocklebury care homes. We looked at records for 79 Malmesbury road and found that supervision and appraisals had been carried out and had been recorded.
