During a routine inspection

During our inspection there were a limited number of people who lived at the home. We met one person that had limited communication. Therefore we have not made any direct quotes for people who used the service.

We spoke with two care workers. We found they respected people as individuals and knew a lot about the people and their personal preferences.

People's needs had been assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan.

The provider had a system in place to make sure care workers recruited had the required documents and checks in place to protect people.

People who used the service were cared for by care workers who were suitably trained and qualified to meet people's needs.

The provider made sure care workers were trained to an appropriate standard to meet people's needs. They encouraged care workers to participate in regular team meetings and supervisions.

The provider had systems in place to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people received.

We last inspected the service on 24 July 2012 and found that the provider had incomplete records. During this Inspection we found improvements had been made.

In this report the name of a registered manager appears who was not in post and not managing the regulatory activities at this location at the time of the inspection. Their name appears because they were still a Registered Manager on our register at the time.

24 July 2012

During a routine inspection

At the time of our inspection there were three people who lived at the home. We asked them about how staff respected their privacy and dignity. One person told us that staff respected their privacy. They told us, 'Staff are pretty good, they knock on the door before they come in.'

We also asked them about the choices that they were able to make and whether they had a say in the way the home was run. One person told us they had residents' meetings at the home. They said, 'We have them once a month and we can talk about anything.' People told us that as well as the residents' meetings they were able to give their views informally to staff at other times. The acting manager was able to demonstrate that improvements had been made as a result of these discussions.

People told us they had choices. One person said, 'I choose what I wear and I choose what I eat. There's a menu in the kitchen. Sometimes I help plan the menu.'

People said they were happy living at the home. One person said, 'They look after you well.'

The same person told us that they had enough to do during the day. They said, 'I go out three days a week. I go shopping and I go to the pub. I go to the day centre and I chat all day.'

The people we spoke with told us they felt secure living at the home. One person said, 'I feel safe. I would speak to the manager if I wasn't happy. Or I'd speak to staff. They'd do something about it.'

People told us that staff understood the level of care and support they needed. One person said, 'They understand what I need. It depends who's on. Some are better than others.'
