27 January 2014

During a routine inspection

There were 17 people accommodated at the service at the time of our inspection. We were able to speak with three people who used the service. One person told us, “I like it here, it is my home.” Another person told us that the staff, “Make me laugh.” People told us that staff supported them to do activities that they enjoyed doing in the home and in the community. One person told us, “I am having a word lesson today.” This referred to them attending an activity session arranged where words and numbers tasks were given to people in a way which entertained them.

We found that people’s dignity and independence was respected in the service. We observed people provide care in a positive and kind way, staff interacted with people in a way that they understood and that met their individual needs.

We found that the care provided was safe and that care plans had been reviewed regularly. Care plans were detailed in a format that people could understand and had picture guides to support understanding of how to use equipment to meet their needs safely.

We found that there was a sufficient number of staff on duty on the day of our inspection. The staff we spoke with were all happy in their work and were positive about the company and registered manager. The registered manager showed clear leadership by implementing improvements at the service which have been sustained since our last inspection on 04 March 2013.

One person told us, “I am involved in everything.” This referred to them attending resident's monthly meetings and staff meetings to discuss menus, activities and what was happening in the service.

We found that the service was clean and met requirements of cleanliness and infection prevention and control. The service had clear policies and procedures in place for the management of outbreaks.

People had appropriately consented to care and treatment. Care was provided in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and we saw evidence of mental capacity assessments to support this.

We found that people’s dignity and independence was not always respected in the service. We observed instances during our inspection where people were not provided with a choice and were not treated with respect.
