During a routine inspection

During our visit we used a number of different methods to find out what it was like for the people who lived at Rosehedge. We spoke to three people about the home this included the service manager and two support staff. We also spoke to two of the relatives of the people who lived at Rosehedge by telephone.

Their comments included:

'We're quite happy and he seems happy when he comes home. They keep to his routine'.

'I can't speak highly enough they've become like friends'The manager has been a wonder man, well all of them (the staff) but he basically makes sure everything's done, he's an absolute brick and the men (who live there) are his priority'.

There were four people who currently lived at the home and they all had complex needs and were unable to contribute to our report. We observed interaction between them and staff on duty and it was clear that their needs were well known to staff. It appeared that people living there were happy and content and they were given the support they needed.

We asked staff what it was like working at Rosehedge and one of them told us

'It's a good challenge, every day is different, the men here they all appear quite happy, (they) all seem quite close'.

We asked staff if they were well supported by the manager and one member of staff they told us '(we're) very well supported, he's a fantastic manager, he really cares about the men but also cares about the team'.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We spent time observing the support provided to people and following our visit spoke to relatives of two of the people living there. We also talked with three members of staff who held different roles within the home.

Relatives told us that they were happy with the support provided by staff at Rosehedge with one relative describing it as, 'Wonderful' and another as, 'Good, very good'.

The people living at Rosehedge had received the support they had needed with their everyday lives including their health and personal care. We also observed that people had received support to get out and about in their local community and to spend their time at home engaged in hobbies of their choosing.

Systems were in place at Rosehedge to safeguard the people living there. This included clear polices and procedures and training for staff. Recruitment of staff was robust helping to ensure the suitability of staff to work with vulnerable people.

During a routine inspection

We visited the home on Tuesday14th February 2012. We rang the home an hour before we arrived. This was to ensure people were going to be in, as people living there are often out in the community with staff support.

People living at Rosehedge have a range of learning disabilities and mental health issues. Communication was very limited therefore we relied on observations between staff and people using the service. However, this did not impact on the amount of information we gained about their experiences living there.

At the time of our visit some people were in and around the home and others were in their rooms.

There were a number of staff on duty throughout the inspection process and we gained comments from most of them in respect of their views on working in the service. They told us, 'I have worked here for a long time, it's a good place to work every day is different.' Also, 'it can be challenging but it's really rewarding.'

We were acknowledged by two people who live there when we arrived. They were very responsive. Staff were very aware of residents communication difficulties and acted as advocates.

Everybody living in the home have their own choice of lifestyles. Some people were preparing to go out, another was enjoying watching a film in their lounge area. We saw staff were on duty in numbers which meet the needs of people living there.

People living at Rosehedge are encouraged to express their views in their own way. We saw this during the site visit by way of observing how people went about their daily lives, although this was only a snapshot of the service.
