Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 2 September to 20 September 2024. We completed the assessment of The Old Downs Residential Dementia Care Home following concerns about risk management and the support people received. We assessed all the quality statements within the safe and well led key questions. We found the service was providing a good standard of care and support. Potential risks to people’s health and welfare had been assessed and there was guidance in place to mitigate the risks. People were protected from avoidable harm and discrimination, staff understood their responsibilities to report concerns. Accidents and incidents were recorded and analysed to identify patterns and trends. People’s medicines were managed safely, staff received training and supervision to meet people’s needs and were recruited safely. The provider monitored the quality of the service, when shortfalls were identified, action had been taken to rectify them.
People's experience of this service
People and relatives told us they felt safe living at the service. People felt they were supported according to their preferences and there were enough staff. Relatives told us, they were kept informed of changes in their loved ones needs and health. We were told the building and environment were well maintained. Relatives were confident to raise concerns and action would be taken. Relatives told us, staff had positive relationships with people, encouraged people to be positive and knew how to make people happy. We observed people being supported safely and staff following good practice guidance. People were supported to take part in various activities and follow their interests. Relatives and visitors were encouraged to visit the service whenever they wanted.
