Legh House is a care home registered to provide accommodation and personal care. We undertook an assessment of Legh House between 24 January and 1 May 2024. The assessment included a visit to the service by an inspector on 26 January 2024. We looked at 5 quality statements. We spoke with people who used the service, relatives and staff. This included the registered manager and the provider. Some people could not fully verbalise their feedback, we observed their interactions with staff. There were enough staff to support people. Staff were happy in their role this led to a positive atmosphere. We looked at recruitment files and found documents were missing to ensure staff were recruited safely into the home. This was rectified immediately by the registered manager. However, we found a breach of the legal regulation in relation to staff training. Staff had not always received training that was relevant to their roles and responsibilities. We looked at people’s care plans and found people were mostly protected from abuse. The registered manager, provider and staff understood their roles however, some staff training was out of date. There were systems in place to ensure safeguarding concerns were investigated and reported as appropriate. Staff knew how to raise concerns if there were incidents and accidents. When these occurred, appropriate action was taken. People were encouraged to make their own decisions about their care and treatment. When people did not have capacity to do so, Mental Capacity Assessments had not always been completed inline with the Mental Capacity Act however, the registered manager acted immediately seeking guidance and training and these were all in place by the end of our assessment. Risk assessments had not always been reviewed regularly and some did not contain up to date information. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of the service

People told us staff were kind and treated them with respect. People told us they were encouraged to make their own decisions and felt empowered by the staff to do so. People told us they felt safe. Relatives spoke positively about the home and the staff caring for their loved one. One relative told us, “I love it there, it gives me real peace of mind that [loved one] is there, safe and being looked after well.”
