Staff knew people well and promoted people’s independence. Where people needed support, this was provided. Staff treated people with kindness. People were treated with dignity and respect; their privacy was protected.

Independence, choice and control

People told us staff encouraged them to do things for themselves and maintain their independence as much as possible. Comments included, “Yes they encourage me to do what I can for myself.” And, “The staff are good at encouraging mum to do things for herself where possible”.

Staff asked people for their consent and offered people choices throughout the day. Staff knocked on people’s doors before entering, even if the door was open. We saw staff were kind to people, treated them with respect and promoted their dignity. People looked clean and well cared for and were dressed appropriately. Some people were moving around the service independently where they could, and others were using self-propelling wheelchairs to mobilise.

Care plans included information on what people could do for themselves and encouraged independence. For example, staff were guided to break tasks down for one person to help them achieve things for themselves.

Staff understood the importance of supporting people to do things for themselves and told us they worked to promote independence. One staff said, “We preach independence and autonomy; One act of independence is so essential for anyone’s sense of self.” And, “We encourage people to be as independent as possible, for example, reminding them of how well they brush their own teeth. I will get a bowl of water for someone who will them wash their own face or hands, putting their flannel, soap in towel in easy reach. You mustn’t take anything away from them that they can do for themselves”.
