Our view of the service

Summerdale Court Care Home is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care to up to 112 people. The service provides support to older people and people living with dementia. At the time of our inspection there were 56 people using the service. All bedrooms have en-suite facilities. There is a large communal lounge, a dining room, and a garden. Inspection activity started on 2 October 2024 and ended on 09 October 2024. We carried out the site visit on 3 October 2024. We gave the service 24 hours’ notice of the inspection. This was because we wanted to make sure someone would be available to support us with the inspection. We looked at 15 quality statements as part of this assessment; learning culture, safe systems, pathways and transitions, safeguarding, involving people to manage risks, safe environments, safe and effective staffing, infection prevention and control, medicines optimisation, shared direction and culture, capable, compassionate and inclusive leaders, freedom to speak up, workforce equality, diversity and inclusion, governance, management and sustainability, partnerships and communities, and, listening, improvement and innovation. The last rating for the service was requires improvement, published on 24 April 2023. This inspection was carried out to follow up on action we told the provider to take at the last inspection. We found improvements had been made since our last inspection and the service had met the breaches relating to regulation 12.

People and their relatives were satisfied with the care provided by Summerdale Court Care Home. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs and the recruitment procedures were robust. The service had an efficient system to manage accidents and incidents and learn from them, so they were less likely to happen again Risks to people were identified and care was planned to mitigate the risks. People were protected from the risk of abuse and harm and staff understood their responsibilities for keeping people safe. Medicines were kept safe and given to people at the right time. We were assured that infection prevention and control (IPC) measures were appropriately followed. There was a suitable supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) and cleaning products, and they were used effectively to minimise the spread of infection. Staff received appropriate training, support and development which enabled them to meet people’s needs effectively. People maintained good physical and mental health because the staff team worked closely with other health and social care professionals. There was an open and inclusive culture in the service, with staff, people, relatives and other external professionals encouraged to help improve the service provided to people. There were procedures to monitor the quality of the service and where issues were identified action was taken to address these to promote continuous improvement. Staff had access to a range of policies and procedures, and this helped them to carry out their role. The service worked in partnership with other organisations to support and care for people.
