Care staff provided compassionate care and supported people with kindness, respect and dignity. The staff ensured they gained consent from people before providing them with support and effectively communicated with people based on their individual needs. Staff empowered people to stay independent as much as possible and only supported them when it was required. Overall, people felt they had autonomy and control over their daily routines. Each person had a person-centred care plan that described people's support needs and how staff could support them.

Staff told us they worked with a person-centred approach to care. They paid attention to people's needs and took time to get to know people as individuals. The staff we spoke with understood that each person was different. Therefore, they offered support tailored to people's needs, preferences and personalities. When new people arrived at the service, the staff told us they looked through their care plans and then discussed them with the person to ensure they reflected their thoughts, needs and wishes. The service manager and external professionals confirmed that the staff worked with people well. One professional told us that people seemed to be doing well at St Mungo's Hilldrop Road. They added that staff were responsive and worked well with other professionals to ensure people received the best care they could.

Care plans contained information about people’s preferences.

People told us they liked the staff and felt supported by them. People we spoke with said they were glad they could maintain their independence and go out when and where they wanted. People we spoke with expressed they felt the staff looked after their well-being and personal care needs well.
