Archived: Sycamore Court Residential Care Home

People using the service have a care plan which is developed from their initial assessment and incorporates their goals and aspirations. We spoke with people who uses the service and asked them about their involvement in care planning, they said:-

'My keyworker talks with me about my care plan, I know what it says.'

'They look after me well.'

'I can talk to my keyworker about my care plan.'

People residing at Sycamore Court are supported to make their own decisions about the care and support they receive, and their views and decisions are recorded. The support people receive includes all aspects of their daily lives, including employment, recreation and hobbies. People told us about how they spend their time and what activities they take part in, they said:-

"I work part time in an office."

"I take part in the special Olympics every week."

"I've been to London to the theatre to see' Les Miserable'."

"I go bowling at 'Hollywood Bowl'."

"I'm going to college this year; I'm doing a cookery course. I also cook with staff help in the kitchen upstairs.'

"My favourite game on the console is golf."

People residing at Sycamore Court are supported are encouraged to make decisions and are provided with information about how to ensure that they know what to do if they are unhappy and the risks they may be exposed to being a vulnerable adult. We found that individual support and meetings are used to talk with people and explain to them about safety issues.

We spoke with someone who receives a service and asked them what they knew about safeguarding, they told us:-

"It's about being safe, and knowing what to do if you're unhappy with something or you see something that isn't right."

We asked someone who uses the service if they knew who to speak with if they were unhappy about something or wished to complain. They told us '

"I'd speak to my keyworker."

Sycamore Court is well maintained and encourages people who receive a service to influence the d'cor and furnishing, and help to keep the environment clean and tidy. One person told us:-

"I'm hoping to decorate my room this year, it's blue at the minute but I'm not sure what colour I want yet."

People using the service are supported by staff who have been recruited following a robust procedure, and who have received a range of training that enables them to care for people. People using the service have a good rapport with staff and they are confident in speaking with their keyworker, and many staff have worked at the service for a significant period of time. We asked someone who receives a service whether they had been involved in the recruitment of staff, they told us-

"I took part in an interview once, I enjoyed it and would like to do it again."
