Our view of the service

Date of assessment 7 February to 10 April 2024. Surbitonian Gardens is a residential care home providing personal care to up to 80 people. At the time of our assessment they were supporting 52 people, who were older people some of whom were living with dementia. This assessment was prompted in part due to concerns received about staffing and safeguarding. A decision was made for us to examine those risks. Professionals expressed some concerns over the safety and continuity of care, but were confident with the changes the new management team had implemented within a short period of time. Staff felt there were not enough of them scheduled to support people, but the provider’s dependency data demonstrated there were enough staff scheduled to work. Care plans usually included enough information for care workers to support people, but we did identify some gaps. Mental capacity assessments and best interest decisions were made in accordance with legislation, but these were sometimes lacking in detail. Staff received regular training, but were not receiving quarterly supervisions of their performance. Staff were recruited safely to ensure they were competent and of good character. The provider did not have feedback mechanisms to obtain feedback from all people using the service. There were systems in place to improve the service and ensure lessons were learned. The new management team were addressing concerns with the service by working with the local authority and multidisciplinary professionals. They had made significant progress within a short period of time and had further plans in place to continue making improvements.

People's experience of this service

Although people felt safe living at the care home, most of them said that more staff were needed to ensure effective care delivery. One person told us “"[Staff] don’t have a lot of time to chat, they’re always in a rush. You see them dashing about so I suppose they could do with 1 or 2 extra people to help out". People told us they had access to healthcare when they required it and that staff attended to their care needs as necessary. People told us they felt safe living at the home. One person told us, "I feel safe and I’m very happy. The staff are superb”.
