Letter from the Chief Inspector of Hospitals

"Healthcare at Home Ltd provides a variety of medical, nursing and care services to private and NHS patients in various geographical areas across England. Healthcare at Home Ltd Bristol is a registered location that has seven field based teams covering, London, Devon and Cornwall, Bristol, Gloucester, Taunton and Somerset, Southampton and Portsmouth, Wales and Surrey. Nurses from these teams visit and provide treatment and care to patients in their own homes. The office in Bristol has consulting rooms, a clinic and staff offices. The registered manager is based at the location.

The location is registered to provide the following regulated activities:

Personal Care
Nursing Care
Treatment of disease, disorder or injury
Diagnostic and screening procedures
Management of supply of blood and blood derived products.

We carried out an announced onsite inspection on 4 - 6 May 2016 where we observed practice, spoke with staff, patients and the provider.

We have not published a rating for this service. CQC does not currently have a legal duty to award ratings for this service. We did however, find the service provided safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well led services to patients.

In this report the name of a registered manager appears who was not in post and not managing the regulatory activities at this location at the time of the inspection. The name appears because they were still the Registered Manager on our register at the time.

We looked at comments from people who used the service and saw that they were happy with the treatment that had been provided. There were comments such as " I have been treated with such kindness, skill and good nature" and "A most efficient service, carried out by very proficient and caring nurses all of whom have been a pleasure to meet". We saw that staff protected people's privacy and maintained their dignity.

Care and attention was paid to people's individual needs so that they received effective and appropriate treatment. Staff were trained to understand the specific needs of people having treatment at home or receiving intravenous therapy at the Bristol centre. There were facilities in place to deal with emergencies and any adverse incidents were dealt with effectively and recorded appropriately.

Staff were supported and managed effectively and were encouraged to up-date their skills and knowledge. Clinical skills were regularly assessed and further development encouraged.

We visited the office on the 24 January 2013 to look at the records held and the environment. On the day of our inspection we met with the registered manager and spoke with three members of staff.

The service provides treatment to people both in their own homes and in a clinic, based in the office location. A small pathology laboratory is also situated within the location.

We spoke with five people who use the service, both at the clinic and also having treatment in their own homes. Feedback from all the people we spoke with was positive about the service they received.

People told us staff were knowledgeable about their care needs and always included them in the discussions and decisions. People felt safe and relaxed with the staff supporting them.

Comments included;' they are absolutely brilliant staff, I really couldn't wish for better'. 'they are very understanding and any queries I have are dealt with immediately'. 'I have the same nurse which is fantastic really, as it helps to put me at ease. We know each other now as we are together quite a long time for the treatment'.

We spoke with two people who used the service. They had received information about their treatment both verbally and in a written format. Both patients told us they had received all of the information they needed.

We were told that staff had treated them with respect and dignity and that their privacy had been maintained during their treatment. One person told us they felt at ease having their treatment and had been reassured throughout.

Another person told us about having treatment at home and said "it was like having a friend come for a cup of coffee".

People told us they had received a clear and proactive treatment plan. They also told us that staff were knowledgeable about the treatment which they provided them with.

We were told by one person that they were always able to contact the clinic, day or night, if they had a concern or needed advice.

The people who used the service that we spoke with all told us they felt safe whilst receiving treatment.
