Our current view of the service

Requires improvement

Updated 31 January 2025

We carried out a follow up assessment of South Haven Lodge Care Home between 13 February 2025 and 13 March 2025. We needed to check compliance with the legal regulations following the previous assessment.

The service is a residential care home providing support and nursing care to adults and people who may be living with dementia.

This service has been in Special Measures since October 2024. The provider has demonstrated sufficient improvements have been made and the service is no longer rated as inadequate overall or in any of the key questions. Therefore, this service is no longer in Special Measures and our overall rating has changed from inadequate to requires improvement.

At our last assessment completed in October 2024 the service was in breach of legal regulations regarding safeguarding, consent, fit and proper persons employed, staffing and dignity and respect and good governance. Improvements have been made in these areas and these breaches have been met. However, we found a continued breach of safe care and treatment, due to risk and medicines management and environmental concerns.

There were several areas of improvement seen during this assessment, including the appointment of a new manager and senior leadership team, increased staff training, more effective and robust auditing processes and oversight and evidence that learning for incidents and accidents had been considered. Staff were also observed to provide care and support to people in a kind, caring and person-centred way.

The improvements made were in their infancy and needed to be embedded into practice and sustained.

People's experience of the service

Updated 31 January 2025

During the assessment we received feedback from 6 people, 5 relatives and 8 members of staff including the manager. We also reviewed 6 people’s care records.

People told us they felt safe and were involved in planning their care. People spoke positively about the service and the staff and felt they were supported in a kind and respectful way by staff who knew them well. People had the equipment they needed to promote their independence and improve their quality of life. Relatives confirmed they were involved and included in their loved one’s care and kept up to date with any concerns or changes in their loved one’s condition.

Staff were attentive and responded positively and quickly to people. We observed encouraging interactions and there was a relaxed and calm atmosphere within the home. Visitors were made to feel welcome and confirmed they could visit at any time.
