Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they could make everyday decisions, so care and support was delivered in a way which suited them. Staff respected what people could do for themselves but supported them when needed. A person told us, “It’s very nice here, they are good to me”. During our visit we saw people joining in a coffee morning and being supported to have their hair done. People were able to welcome visitors when they wished.

Staff gave examples of how they promoted people’s independence daily. A staff member said, “If a person has the slightest bit of independence, it's encouraged here. For example, walking wherever possible. We step in to support and assist when needed. Sometimes people just need encouragement and then a chat and for someone to just be there”.

There was a range of planned activities for people to join if they wished, if not, staff would spend one to one time with them. A relative told us, "Mum loves the activities, she really engages with them and the staff make sure no one is left out". We observed a person enjoyed watching a nature program with a staff member, who knew which type of program would help to calm them. Later in the morning people were encouraged to join in with a sing-a -long. Staff involved people who all were given a percussion instrument to join in, we observed a relaxed and jovial atmosphere. Staff asked people whether they needed help with food and respected people’s choices waited for permission - interactions were warm, friendly, gentle and relaxed.

People were supported to retain as much independence as possible. The provider ensured peoples needs were regularly reviewed .Staff made sure to offer equipment, such as, adapted crockery so people could remain independent when eating and drinking. Where people required equipment for their mobility, specialised wheelchairs were prescribed by healthcare professionals for people’s comfort and safely. Staff would support people with different aids depending on how they were feeling on that day.
