Our view of the service

This assessment was undertaken between 13 November 2024 and 28 November 2024. Langham Manor is a nursing home providing accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care and is registered for 75 people. At the time of our assessment there were 45 people living at the service. The service supports older people including those with nursing needs and dementia. The assessment was undertaken by two inspectors, a medicines inspector and a professional adviser who was a registered nurse. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service also attended and spoke to people about their experience of living at Langham Manor. This assessment was prompted by information we held about this service. As this was the first assessment since their registration, we carried out a full assessment. People were treated with kindness and were supported by a consistent team of staff who knew them well. Staff were visible and we observed appropriate levels of supervision at lunch time. Recruitment systems were robust, but staff had not always received the training that they needed in key areas. People received their medicines as prescribed but the processes in place required strengthening to keep people safe. The environment had been completed to a high standard and people had access to variety of spaces and communal areas including an onsite café which gave people an alternative place to meet their family and friends. Safety shortfalls in the environment were however not always prioritised for repair or replacement. There were clear management arrangements in place and regular audits were undertaken but the systems in place were not fully effective as they had not always identified or acted on findings. The provider was in breach of the legal regulation relating to governance and we have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns.

People's experience of this service

People were happy with the service and told us that they were supported by kind and caring staff who knew their needs. The service planned and delivered people’s care with them, including what was important and mattered to them. People received regular baths and showers. Risks to their wellbeing were assessed and people told us that that they received effective care and their independence was promoted. There were systems in place to consult with people about their needs and wishes and their care was regularly reviewed. People enjoyed the activities and social engagement available. People were supported to access the local community. People’s nutrition and hydration needs were supported but feedback on the quality of the meals was inconsistent with some people relatively positive but other less so. People told us that they had good access to GPs and other health professionals, such as chiropody and opticians when they needed it. They were clear about who to contact if they had any problems and wanted to raise a complaint.
