Our view of the service

This assessment was carried out between 17 June and 9 July 2024. St Margaret’s Care Home is a residential care home providing personal care to adults, some of whom were living with dementia. This was the first assessment of this care home, which was prompted due to serious concerns. At this assessment we found 9 breaches of regulation which concerned person-centred care, dignity and respect, safe care and treatment, safeguarding people from abuse, meeting nutritional and hydration needs, premises and equipment, formal support for staff, recruitment and good governance. We could not be assured people received their medicines as prescribed. Risks to people had not been assessed, monitored and reviewed. Allegations of financial abuse had not been adequately followed up and staff lacked knowledge to safeguard people from harm. Dietary needs were not being met as people prescribed supplements were not receiving these items. A number of environmental hazards were present, including fire safety concerns. Systems to demonstrate oversight and governance were absent and leadership was inadequate. Staff did not receive sufficient training for their role and unsafe recruitment practices were evident. We asked the provider for immediate assurances about people’s safety. However, these were not provided within the specified timescales. We followed these issues up by carrying out a third site visit.
