Our view of the service

The Abbeys is residential care home which provides accommodation and personal care for up 80 people. At the time of our inspection there were people living in The Abbeys. The rating at the last inspection in October 2018 was Good. At this inspection, we found that the service remained Good. We carried out this inspection under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (the Act) as part of our regulatory functions. We checked whether the provider was meeting the legal requirements and regulations associated with the Act. We looked at the overall quality of the service and provided a rating for the service under the Health and Social Care Act 2008. The inspection team consisted of an inspector and an Expert By Experience. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service. This provider is required to have a registered manager to oversee the delivery of regulated activities at this location. A registered manager is a person who has registered with the Care Quality Commission to manage the service. Registered managers and providers are legally responsible for how the service is run, for the quality and safety of the care provided and compliance with regulations. At the time of our inspection there was registered manager in post. We inspected the service because we were alerted to an incident that occurred at The Abbeys. We reviewed evidence related to the incident in detail. There had been a thorough and thoughtful investigation and timely and appropriate remedial action had been taken to prevent recurrence as a result of lessons learned. We observed a 'reflective practice' approach throughout the home which identified themes and trends and lessons to be learned. CQC saw no indication of concerns about ongoing risk of harm to users of the service and no indication of a breach of a prosecutable fundamental standard.

People's experience of this service

We spoke to 5 people who lived at The Abbeys and 6 family members who were visiting relatives on the day of inspection. People told us they were safe at The Abbeys. One person said, “I feel safe here because I feel at home and happy.” Another person said, “Oh yes I am safe and there is always somebody on duty and walking round.” Family members were happy that their loved ones were safe. One relative told us, “[Person] is much safer here than at home and they have people around.” Another relative said, “[Relative] is a 100% safe here and I have seen that [the staff] have time for him.” People told us that the staff were caring and that there were enough staff on duty during the day to meet their needs. Some of the comments that were shared with us included, “The staff are absolutely wonderful.”, “Yes [they are caring], they will sit and chat with you and if you want to ask any questions, they will answer you.” and “There seems to be enough staff around.” We observed staff using a hoist and they were very careful and maintained good communication with the person being hoisted. We observed at times there were many call bells ringing and staff responded to them quite quickly. The quiz activity was really good and people were encouraged to participate. It was well run and the questions were appropriate and good for the people who took part. We observed lunch at The Abbeys. The tables were laid nicely with table cloths, cutlery and condiments. There were flowers on the table. People were given a choice of three different juices to have with their meal. People were offered 2 choices of main meal at lunch time. The Abbeys were just changing from their Winter to Summer menu. Staff wore aprons and gloves when they served people with their meals and they gave people a wet wipe for their hands to ensure they were clean.
