During an assessment under our new approach

We carried out this on-site announced assessment on 22 May 2024. We found the practice had met regulations. The practice had systems to manage risks, and the recruitment procedures reflected current legislation. Infection control procedures followed published guidance. Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance, and they were treated with dignity and respect. At the time of our assessment, patients could access care, support and treatment when required. There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement. The practice is in Birmingham and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children. At the time of our assessment, the dental team included 5 dentists, 1 foundation dentist, 6 dental nurses, 3 dental hygienists and 1 practice manager. The practice also had a visiting oral surgeon. The practice had 4 treatment rooms. During the assessment we spoke with 4 dentists, 5 dental nurses, 1 dental hygienist and the practice manager.

During a routine inspection

Our visit was discussed and arranged with the practice in advance. This was to ensure that we had time to see and speak to staff working at the practice, as well as people registered with the practice.

During the inspection we spoke with two dentists (one of whom was also the registered provider), three dental nurses and the practice manager and observed two consultations. After our inspection visit, we spoke by telephone with eight people who were registered with the practice to ask them about their experiences of the service.

People that used the practice told us that they were happy with the quality of treatment received. They felt they were given enough information about their treatment options and were able to ask all the questions they wanted to. Their comments included, 'Fantastic service' and 'Gives you full information, give you every option for treatments.' People who were very nervous about going to the dentist told us that the staff were very patient with them. Staff reassured them throughout their treatment, putting them at ease.

People told us that the practice was clean and tidy and that they had no concerns about hygiene.

Staff received a range of training so that they had up to date knowledge and skills in order to treat people safely when they attended the practice.

There were systems in place that ensured people using the service were asked their views about the service so the provider could use the information to improve.
