Equity in access

Regulations met

The practice organised and delivered services to meet patients’ needs and preferences. Patients could access care and treatment from the practice within an acceptable timescale for their needs. The practice had an appointment system to respond to patients’ needs. Patients had enough time during their appointment and did not feel rushed.

Staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to ensure the practice was accessible. We saw that a hearing induction loop and reading glasses were available to assist patients who had hearing and sight difficulties. The patient information folder in the waiting room informed patients of this, and also that sign language was available upon request and information could be made available in large print or alternative formats. The practice was located on the ground floor of the building and all areas were wheelchair accessible including an accessible toilet. Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care.

Staff had carried out a disability access audit and had formulated an action plan to continually improve access for patients. The practice supported more vulnerable members of society such as patients living with dementia or adults and children with a learning disability. At the time of this assessment the practice did not display its opening hours, however, this information was available on their website and patient information leaflet, and we were told that the practice opening hours would be displayed going forward. The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to NICE guidelines. The practice provided telephone numbers for patients needing emergency dental treatment during the working day and when the practice was not open. Staff took part in an emergency on-call arrangement with another local practice and patients were directed to the appropriate out of hours service. At the time of inspection, patients who needed an urgent appointment were offered one in a timely manner. When the practice was unable to offer an urgent appointment, they worked with other dental practices within the Bhandal group to support urgent access for patients.
