We assessed one quality statement in the caring key question and found areas of good practice. The scores for these areas have been combined with scores based on the rating from the last inspection, which was good. Our rating for this key question remains good. People were treated with kindness and respect. Staff told us they had time to talk and listen to people and described in detail how they cared for people in a way that promoted their dignity and privacy. Our observations confirmed this. We obtained feedback from professionals who visited the home and they felt people were well treated. A visiting professional told us, "I haven’t been concerned about the way staff treat people in the service. The manager is compassionate and makes every effort to try and ensure the staff are too."

Kindness, compassion and dignity

People told us they were consistently treated with kindness and respect. A person told us, "They aren’t carers to me, they are friends" and "I couldn't hope for better staff." A person told us how staff treated them with kindness when they were feeling low following a period in hospital, they told us, "When I came out of hospital I was flat and just wanted to die, but the kids here are very affectionate and picked me up. Just kind, holding my hand and being nice. You don’t get a lot of compassion at my age but they have shown me it and they have picked me up." Relatives also spoke positively about the kind and caring nature of staff. A relative told us, " The staff are very good, we are pleased with the staff, they are helpful and kind." A relative told us staff worked with them to ensure communication with their loved one was meaningful. They told us, "They have gone through a lot to get to know her. I have given them photo books and they do use them."

Staff told us they had time to talk and listen to people and described in detail how they care for people in a way that promoted their dignity and privacy. The registered manager told us they spent a lot of time in communal areas observing how staff interact with people to ensure this was appropriate. They felt staff had a close bond with people and had not identified any concerns through their observations.

We obtained feedback from professionals who visited the home and they felt people were well treated. A visiting professional told us, "I haven’t been concerned about the way staff treat people in the service. The manager is compassionate and makes every effort to try and ensure the staff are too."

Our observations found staff interacted with people in a kind and compassionate manner. We observed people having their hair styled and their nails polished and staff were engaged in pleasant conversation throughout. We observed staff comforting a person when they were upset and they helped the person to sit in a more comfortable position which led to a positive outcome for this person. Good interactions were also noted at lunchtime as we observed staff sitting with people and doing their best to make the mealtime experience positive.
