Our current view of the service

Good

Updated 24 June 2024

We carried out this responsive assessment between 02 July 2024 and 24 July 2024. We looked at how Byron Lodge Care Home Ltd assessed and planned for people's care needs, and how they trained and supervised staff to support people according to their needs and preferences. Byron Lodge Care Home Ltd is a residential care home providing accommodation for persons who require personal care and nursing care for up to 28 people. The service provides support to older people, some of who lived with dementia. At the time of our assessment there were 26 people living at the service. We spoke with 7 people, 5 relatives, 1 friend and 9 staff during the assessment. We observed care and support in communal areas and reviewed 7 people’s care plans, 5 staff recruitment records as well as general records for the service. These included staff training records, meeting records, policies and procedures and audits. The service had systems and processes in place to safely administer and record medicines use, recording of as and when required medicines required improvement. There was an auditing process in place that helped to identify areas for improvement and minimise impact on people’s care and safety. Staff supported people in a clean and well-equipped environment. People were protected from poor care and abuse. The provider had policies in place and staff had been trained. Safeguarding concerns were reported to the appropriate authorities. Most risk assessments gave staff enough information to provide safe care; a person did not have a risk assessment in place in relation to catheter care when they had lived at the service for more than 7 weeks. Care plans were detailed and people's preferences and choices were documented, some care plans were more person-centred than others. There were enough staff deployed to provide support for people. Staff knew people well and understood how to provide safe care. The management team had embedded quality monitoring and audit processes.

People's experience of the service

Updated 24 June 2024

People's feedback about the service they received was positive. People said, “The staff here look after me very well” and “The staff know how I like things to be done.” People's relatives told us their loved ones were safe and well looked after. They were kept informed about changes in health or incidents and accidents. A relative said, “All I can say is, if or when I need to go into a home, this is the place I would like to be.” Another relative told us, “We were apprehensive when mum first came here because we didn’t know anything about care homes, but the staff have made it so easy and comfortable and any concerns we had have been well and truly alleviated.” People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives.
