Safeguarding
People felt safe and well supported by staff who knew them well. Relatives were confident in the provider’s ability to protect their family members from abuse.
Staff received regular safeguarding training. This meant staff understood different types of abuse, the actions required to prevent it and what they should do if they suspected it. Leaders reviewed all safeguarding concerns and shared the lessons learnt from them across the organisation.
The provider had safeguarding procedures in place which were regularly reviewed. Incidents were analysed and plans were put in place to reduce risks to people and improve the safety of their care and support.
Involving people to manage risks
People’s risks were assessed and mitigated, enabling them to lead full lives. People, their relatives and where necessary, healthcare professionals participated in people’s risk assessments.
Staff and leaders understood people’s individual and specific risks. Registered managers made referrals to ensure people’s changing needs were met.
We saw people supported in line with their care plans and risk assessments. For example, we saw people’s mobility supported according to their falls risk assessment to prevent accident and injury.
People were supported with a range of risk assessments which included their health, environment, behaviour, and possessions. The registered managers coordinated regular reviews of people’s risks to ensure they remained well managed.

Safe and effective staffing
People and their relatives said there were enough staff available to provide safe and effective care and support.
Staff we spoke with said there were enough staff available at all times to ensure people’s safety. Leaders coordinated an ongoing staff recruitment campaign to maintain appropriate staffing levels across each of the supported living services. Registered managers supervised and appraised staff and ensured they completed required training.
We visited individual services and found people were supported by sufficient numbers of trained and experienced staff. This enabled people to receive support in line with their needs and commissioned care plans.
The provider undertook checks of potential staff prior to their recruitment to ensure they were safe to provide care and support. New staff received induction when they started and on-going training and supervision throughout their careers with the Brandon Trust.
