People were protected from harm. The service helped keep people safe through formal and informal sharing of information about risks. Actions taken to prevent harm involved everyone, including staff as well as people using the service. There was a culture of safety and learning. The service’s infection prevention and control policy was up to date. All relevant staff had completed food hygiene training and followed correct procedures for preparing and storing food.

Involving people to manage risks

Staff managed the safety of the living environment and equipment in it well through checks and action to minimise risk. Staff considered less restrictive options before limiting people’s freedom. Each person’s care and support plan included ways to avoid or minimise the need for restricting their freedom. Staff told us they felt safe from potential risks to their safety. Staff told us they had access to small device which they could activate to seek emergency service support if they felt their safety was under threat. Staff told us "Risks assessments are discussed in detail with residents upon moving in and are regularly discussed with residents and updated as needed". Staff also told us they had access to external healthcare professionals to support them manage any potential risk of deterioration in people's mental health.

Risks were assessed, people and staff understood them. There was a balanced and proportionate approach to risk that supported people and respected the choices they made about their care. The registered manager ensured policies and procedures were up to date. We noted staff held daily handover meetings to share any concerns or pass on learning to manage risks.

People were protected from the risk of harm. People were informed about any risks and how to keep themselves safe. People we spoke with told us staff supported them to manage risk posed to them and prevent them from harm. For instance, one person told us how they had agreed with staff on what they could prevent the risk of fire. One person told us the risk of a deterioration in their health was managed well by staff.

Infection prevention and control

The provider and staff were aware of current relevant national guidance. Staff told us they received regular training on how to prevent infections. Comments from staff included “My work environment is kept clean and we maintain a regular clean throughout the day/evening” and “Yes I have had infection control training and believe that regular hand washing and the use of PPE is important in reducing risks of infections.” Another staff members told us how they supported and promoted people to keep them safe from infections.

People were protected from risk of ill-health, the provider had an effective approach to assessing and managing the risk of infection. One person told us how they had received 5 covid vaccinations. One other person told us how they were supported to maintain hygiene in their own bedroom. People were protected as much as possible from the risk of infection because premises and equipment were kept clean and hygienic.

The service used effective infection, prevention and control measures to keep people safe, and staff supported people to follow them. Staff had access to policies and procedures to ensure they kept up to date with any changes in guidance. We found infection control and prevention was discussed at staff meetings.
