Updated 12 March 2024

Barrowhill Hall is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care for up to 74 people. The service provides support to people living with dementia, mental health concerns, sensory impairments and younger adults. At the time of this assessment, 67 people lived in the home. This assessment started on 04 February 2024 and ended on 22 April 2024. Site visits to gather people’s experiences and observe care practices were carried out on 04 and 11 April 2024. The last rating for this service was good (published 11 December 2019). This assessment was carried out due concerns we received regarding safe handling of medicines, freedom to speak up, and effective care monitoring. As a result, we undertook an assessment to review 15 quality statements within safe, effective, responsive and well-led only. The overall rating for the service has remained good based on the findings of this assessment. However, overall governance and quality monitoring requires further improvement to ensure care practices are effectively audited and monitored.

People's experience of the service

Updated 12 March 2024

People told us they felt safe living in the home and could raise concerns with staff and the registered manager. However, people told us they did not always feel involved within the service. People told us staff were kind and respected their privacy and dignity. People told us they had choice and control over their lives. We observed staff respecting people’s decisions and encouraging people to be independent. Relatives told us they felt included, and the provider kept them informed of changes or concerns. However, 2 relatives felt the provider was sometimes slow to follow up on their concerns. Relatives and people told us the provider worked well with other agencies and made referrals to other health professionals such as the falls team, district nurses and doctors in a timely manner. We observed staff responding promptly to people who required support. We observed staff using sensory activities to engage with people who experienced communication and mobility difficulties.
