During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out an announced focused inspection at Paddock and Longwood Family Practice on 17 September 2019 as part of our inspection programme.

We decided to undertake an inspection of this service following our annual review of the information available to us. This inspection looked at the following key questions; are services effective, are services responsive and are services well-led.

Because of the assurance received from our review of information we carried forward the ratings for the following key questions: are services safe and are services caring.

Our judgement of the quality of care at this service is based on a combination of what we found when we inspected, information from our ongoing monitoring of data about services and information from the provider, patients, the public and other organisations.

We have rated this practice as good overall, and requires improvement for are services responsive and requires improvement for all population groups.

We found that:

  • Patients received effective care and treatment that met their needs.
  • The way the practice was led and managed promoted the delivery of high-quality, person-centre care.

The areas where the provider should make improvements are:

  • Continue to monitor and improve patient’s experiences of appointments when accessing the practice.

During a routine inspection

Letter from the Chief Inspector of General Practice

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Paddock and Longwood Family Practice on 26 August 2015. Overall the practice is rated as good.

Our key findings across all the areas we inspected were as follows:

  • Staff understood and fulfilled their responsibilities to raise concerns and to report incidents, near misses and any identified safeguarding issues. Issues arising were discussed at regular team meetings
  • Risks to patients were assessed and well managed,
  • Patients’ needs were assessed and care was planned and delivered following best practice guidance. Staff had received training appropriate to their roles. However we noticed staff were out of date for infection prevention and control training and fire training. The practice has since provided evidence that this training has been arranged. Additional training and development needs had been identified and delivered
  • A comprehensive staff handbook was in use although some of the policies contained within it were in need of updating.
  • Patients said they were treated with compassion, dignity and respect and they were involved in their care and decisions about their treatment
  • Information about services and how to complain was available and easy to understand
  • Patients said there was continuity of care, with urgent appointments available the same day
  • The practice had good facilities and was well equipped to treat patients and meet their needs
  • There was a clear leadership structure and staff felt supported by management. The practice proactively sought feedback from patients and their active Patient Participation Group (PPG) and acted on feedback received

However there are some areas of practice where the provider needs to make improvements:

Importantly the provider should:

  • Ensure staff are up to date with role specific training and that updates are arranged as required.
  • Ensure that the staff handbook to include governance policies and procedures is regularly updated
  • Ensure that systems are in place to check that equipment used is in date
