Our view of the service

Newbury Street Practice is situated within the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care System and delivers General Medical Services (GMS) to a patient population of approximately 15,750. The provider is part of a wider network of GP practices called a primary care network (PCN). The provider belongs to Wantage primary care network. The practice’s clinical team was made up of 1 senior GP Partner, 3 GP Partners and 7 Salaried GPs . There is a nursing team which includes an advanced nurse practitioner and an advanced care practitioner. The provider was supported by a variety of reception, administration staff, patient coordinators and prescription clerks. The practice manager and deputy practice manager provided managerial oversight. The service worked closely with Wantage PCN to share staff including a paramedic, health and wellbeing coach, pharmacy technician and a community mental health worker. We carried out this assessment between 23 and 25 January 2024 to follow up on the breaches of regulation from a previous inspection. We found patients were not always receiving care in line with national guidance. There were concerns around the prescribing of medicines which involved the lack of regular monitoring to minimise the risk of harm to the patients We saw there were gaps in systems to assess, monitor and manage risks to patient safety. The practice was found to be in breach of Regulation 12 and Regulation 17 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulate Activities) Regulations 2014. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of this service

The practice had improved access and had taken number of actions to improve the experience of the people since the last inspection. Patients were overall positive about access to care and treatment and found the new appointment system helpful. We noted that the most recent national GP survey results pre-dated the improvements to access made by the provider.
