Relatives we spoke with were very positive about the way staff cared for their family members. They were unanimous in their view that their family members had benefited from living at Bumblebee Lodge. They told us their family members had control over their day to day lives and made choices about how they received their care. One relative said, “Definitely (treated with respect) the staff are very caring with [Name] and they are happy to live there (I know) because of [Name’s] behaviours. Staff know [Name] and know their needs and through knowing [Name] that brings kindness. I couldn't wish for anyone (staff group) more kind at all.”

All the staff we spoke with had a good knowledge of the people they supported and how they liked to receive their care. One staff member said, “We give (people) choice and it is based on their wants and needs. They feel they can talk to us about anything. For example, we have a person who likes gardening. I help them with their gardening rota. A further member of staff said, “I know (people) well. They will ask me things and it’s about interacting with them and communicating, asking what they would like.” All the staff we spoke with told us they would be happy for one of their relatives to live at the service should the need arise. One member of staff said, “Yes I would (be happy for a member of my family to live here), the staff genuinely care and want the best for the clients.”

During our visits we saw good interactions between staff and people. When we spoke with people who had difficulty verbally expressing themselves, staff were able to support them make themselves known. People were comfortable and confident with staff and presented in a relaxed and calm way.

Where needed, people were supported with the services of an Advocate. One person who lacked capacity to make their own decisions about their care had the services of an independent mental capacity advocate (IMCA). The IMCA service is provided for any person aged 16 years or older, who has no one able to support and represent them, and who lacks capacity to make a decision.
