The provider and staff ensured people's care plans had current information to promote their independence in areas such as mobility, communication and participating in activities both in the home and in the local community. Care plans showed people's communication needs were identified, recorded and These needs were shared appropriately with others.

Staff comments included: "It's important as everyone has a free will and we are meant to promote independence as much as possible, intervene where necessary and make sure we are not taking over someone's life. Essentially we empower [people] and support them but not taking over." and "I support [people] to be independent by encouraging to do to as much as possible for [themselves] like with personal care, choosing own food and drink for example." Staff had a good understanding of how people preferred to be cared for. Staff empowered people to maintain contact with their family and friends and knew people's life histories. Staff demonstrated they understood when people had the capacity to make decisions for themselves and those decisions should be respected. Staff listened to people's wishes and acted upon their decisions. The Registered Manager told us: "We support maximum independence for people even if that means we will give up contract. Family wanted live in care but [person] felt uncomfortable with live-in carer. We worked closely with adults services and local authority safeguarding, family and the person. Care Administrator told us: "We introduced My life TV which is a TV channel designed for people living with Dementia and their carers. Last November we went to London to a Dementia exhibition in ExCel and purchased this licence. It has bespoke Dementia-friendly and stimulating activities, calming content and joyful entertainment. Our clients are already benefitting from it. When [person] doesn't want to go out due to worries, they can do individually designed exercises at home."

People and their relatives told us that people's choices and decisions were respected, and staff enabled people to retain their independence. People and their relatives told us staff supported people's independence, choice and control in life. One person told us: "I'm in control. I'm an independent person. I still have my mind. I can make decisions for myself." Relatives told us: "[Person] is definitely in charge of things. [Staff] give [them] choices with everything." And "Our carer is very considerate and professional and will keep out of the way if necessary."
