Our view of the service
MELM Care Solutions is a supported living service across 3 separate buildings for up to 11 adults with mental health conditions and dementia. There was one person receiving regulated care at the time of this assessment. We completed this assessment due to concerns we received about the management of risk and the standard of care people received. We completed the assessment between 17 April and 3 May 2024. As this was the first assessment at this service, we considered all of our key questions and quality statements. We visited the service on 2 occasions during the assessment process, and gathered feedback remotely from people’s relatives and health and social care professionals who knew the service. During this assessment we identified shortfalls in relation to infection prevention and control, assessing people’s mental capacity, the management of people’s finances, and the providers quality assurance and oversight systems and processes.
People's experience of this service
People were not always protected from risk of financial exploitation and hand drying facilities were not always suitable to minimise the risk of the spread of infections. People were supported by enough suitably trained staff to meet their needs. People received their medicines as prescribed, and the providers systems and processes supported safe medicine practices. People told us they were fond of their support staff and felt they were treated with kindness and compassion. People’s rights in relation to the Mental capacity act 2005 were not always upheld due to a lack of capacity related assessment processes. People received care that was personalised to their needs. However, the quality-of-care people received was not assured as the provider's quality assurance and oversight processes were not always effective.
