Independence, choice and control
We observed people walking freely around the service and supported by staff when they wanted this, often with linked arms, or holding hands with the staff. When one person didn’t feel ready to have lunch, this was respected, and staff returned a few minutes later and asked them again.
Staff promoted people’s independence and encouraged people to do as much as they could for themselves. Staff were patient and used appropriate styles of interaction with people. A member of staff told us, “Staff here do understand people’s communication needs because the communication passports are person centred and there is a large widget board in the lounge which is used all the time.”
People’s care and support plans recorded how staff should provide people’s support in the way they preferred. This included detail of people’s different communication needs to ensure staff understood how best to offer people choices. For example, one person used a white board, and some people used a picture board in the dining area.
People were supported to be as independent as possible, creating a positive experience for them. People were encouraged and supported to make day to day decisions. People chose if they wanted a key to their room which helped increase their independence.
