During a routine inspection
Both wards were clean and hygienic. Staff across both wards showed they had good knowledge and understanding of their responsibility for ensuring a clean and hygienic environment and we found staff followed the appropriate guidance for prevention and control of infections.
Patients received their prescribed medication on time and medicines were properly recorded. However we found that that some medicines were not appropriately labelled and some were not safely stored. We also found that there was a variable understanding amongst staff of what medicines incidents should be reported.
Staff told us that they had been through a period where there had been insufficient staff but this had improved recently due to the recruitment of more newly qualified staff.
New staff completed a detailed induction programme and mandatory training. However we found that staff had not been appropriately supervised and appraised.
There were systems in place for assessing and monitoring the quality of care patients received which included obtaining the views of people who used the service.
Patient's records were kept up to date and appropriately stored.
