South Park Residential Home is a 'care home' that can provide accommodation and personal care to up to 11 people. At the time of our inspection there were 9 older people living at the care home, most of whom were living with dementia. The service was rated requires improvement overall at their last inspection (published 11 October 2022). We conducted our unannounced on-site inspection of this service on 27 March 2024. We looked at 9 quality statements during this responsive inspection which was conducted by an an inspector and an assessor. The service had improved since our last inspection by addressing outstanding breaches we identified at their last inspection provider in relation to medicines and staff recruitment. However, we found the way the provider now operated their oversight and scrutiny systems had improved, but not enough. We found no evidence that people had been harmed however, the way the provider operated their governance systems would require further improvements to be made to fully meet the outstanding breach of Regulation 17. We also found a new breach of Regulation 12 around the management of the risk around fire safety. The care homes environment was suitably adapted, clean and a comfortable place for people to live however, we saw the interior décor was not particularly ‘dementia friendly.’ We recommend the provider consider current guidance on making the interior environment of the care home far more ‘dementia friendly’ for the people living there. Staff and managers understood their duty to safeguard people from abuse and protect them from harm. Staff had been trained to recognise and report the signs of abuse. Managers worked proactively with the relevant agencies when concerns were raised, to make sure people were safeguarded from further risk. Staff supported people to be as independent as possible. Staff ensured people were supported to have choice and control and make decisions about how their care and support was provided.

People's experience of the service

Outcomes for people who lived at the care home were positive overall. People reported receiving the standard of care and support described in all the quality statements we assessed as part of this inspection. One person told us, “I do like living here…This is my home now.” People were supported to live safely at the service, free from abuse or harm. People were supported to understand safeguarding and how to raise concerns when they did not feel safe. People were involved in making decisions about how they wished to be supported to stay safe. People received prompt and appropriate support from sufficient numbers of well deployed and trained staff. People lived in a suitably adapted and comfortable environment. People received their prescribed medicines as and when they should. People received a good standard of care and support from suitably trained and supported staff who understood how people wished to be supported to achieve positive outcomes. People were supported, as far as possible, to have their say on the care they received. People were encouraged and supported to do as much as they could for themselves and maintain their independence.
