Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The registered manager told us they tried to go out and work alongside staff or observe staff when in people’s homes. They told us they were assured staff were treating people with kindness and compassion.

A quality assurance assessment by local authority commissioners found the service had received positive feedback about the way care was provided.

People and their relatives told us staff treated them with kindness, compassion and dignity. Comments included, “The are very attentive and treat me with respect” and “My relative reports that the carers have a wonderful personality. He has a good banter with them and feels comfortable with them being there.”

Treating people as individuals

Staff described the individual approach they took to meeting people’s needs, ensuring care was provided in ways that considered people’s preferences.

People and their relatives told us they were treated as individuals. Comments included, “I think the carers are very good at understanding my individual needs” and “The carers are great to get on with and you can talk to them about anything. They are caring and keen to get to know my relative’s personality.”

Care records identified people’s individual strengths and areas where support was needed. Assessments considered people's protected characteristics, including religious and cultural needs and disabilities.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us staff supported them in ways which maximised their independence. Comments included, “I feel much more independent now with the carers support”.

Staff told us they encouraged people to do as much for themselves as possible, to maximise their independence. One member of staff commented, “Training instils in us to maximise independence and that is set out in the care plans.”

People's care records demonstrated they were involved in decisions about their care. Care plans included ways staff should support people to maximise their independence.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

If people needed additional support for anxiety or distress, this could be provided. The registered manager told us they regularly checked people’s daily notes to make sure all support was provided in a timely way.

People told us staff usually arrived on time unless there were traffic problems or other emergencies. Most people said they had a prompt response from staff in the office if they had any queries or wanted to make changes to their visits.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The service had policies in place to support staff wellbeing, including workplace safely, training, supervision and regular appraisals.

The registered manager told us about systems in place to support staff with their wellbeing. If staff needed reasonable adjustments to working patterns this could be considered. The provider recognised that support for staff was important for care delivery so tried to provide staff with resources for positive wellbeing. Staff told us they received the support they needed to do their job well.
