Our view of the service

Oaktree Hall & Lodge is a care home for up to 78 people. We carried out an assessment of this service to look at 7 quality statements; safeguarding; involving people to manage risks; safe and effective staffing; independence, choice and control; equity in experiences and outcomes; shared direction and culture; and governance, management and sustainability. The assessment included a site visit on 13 February 2024. We found systems were in place to ensure people received safe care and treatment. People were safeguarded from the risk of harm or abuse, and there were enough suitably skilled staff to meet people’s needs. People’s independence and preferences were promoted, and we observed positive interactions between people using the service and staff. We noted some occasions where staff could be more responsive though, which we discussed with the provider. The provider had a quality assurance system in place to monitor the safety and quality of the service. However, action plans had not always been developed when they had identified areas for improvement. The manager assured us action plans would be developed going forward. Overall, the new management team demonstrated a commitment to continuous improvement and had been working to develop a more positive culture at the home. Staff felt supported.

People's experience of this service

People told us they felt safe and comfortable at the service. They knew how to raise any concerns they may have. People told us, and we observed, that they were involved in making decisions about how they wished to be supported. People liked the staff and one described them as, “A lovely group of people.” Another told us, “It suits me to be here, and they (staff) are lovely, the other residents are happy and we have a good relationship.” Other comments included, “They (staff) definitely support me to be as independent as possible. I try to do as much as possible on my own.” Some people did though tell us that an issue with the lift had impacted on their access to the community over recent weeks. This was being addressed at the time of our assessment. People confirmed they could have visitors when they wanted. Relatives we spoke with felt their loved ones were safe and were treated with dignity and respect. They spoke positively about staff and their comments included, “Staff have a respectful and caring manner” and, “I think staff have had the right training to look after my (relative). They know what they’re doing.” Relatives also felt there were generally enough staff. One commented that there was, “Always staff about. Most of the time it’s a consistent group of staff. I see the same faces when I go, I’ve got to know them. It gives me confidence.” Relatives felt staff understood people’s needs and involved them in discussions about their loved one’s care. One relative also told us how the support of the staff had led to positive outcomes for their family member. They felt the service was well run.
