Independence, choice and control

Score: 1

The person's care plan provided some information about what they did and did not like when receiving their care. This meant staff were able to adapt how they provided support to meet these preferences including ensuring their support was dignified and promoted their privacy. However, there was a lack of information about how to promote the person's independence and how to support their decision making in their day to day care.

The provider was not able to demonstrate how they encouraged the person to make choices or promoted their independence. The provider and staff told us they spoke with the person's relatives about care decisions; however it was not clear from the feedback received how the person's communication and capacity had been assessed or how they were involved in making decisions about their care.

The provider's processes for promoting the person's independence, choice and control were not robust. The assessment, care planning and review processes were not carried out effectively and information lacked detail about what the person was able to do for themselves, what decisions they were able to make and how to support their communication to promote their independence and choice.
