Independence, choice and control
Relatives told us their family member was supported to be as independent as they were able. We were given an example of a person going to an external sporting activity. However, some relatives mentioned problems with their family member wearing unfamiliar clothing when they visited them.
Staff gave us good examples of how they supported people to be as independent as they were able. A member of care staff said, “I try to promote independence by stepping back and giving a resident time to do a task for themselves.” Staff also described how they obtained consent before providing care and support. The manager told us the introduction of the resident of the day scheme would support the service to ensure the service was aware of people’s preferences.
We saw people supported to maintain their independence. This included adapting an activity so that a person could participate and staff supporting people to mobilise with encouragement to do as much as they could themselves.
Mental capacity assessments in care plans were decision specific and reviewed regularly. Where appropriate the service had applied to the local authority for authorisations under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
