Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they were supported to make choices and decisions about the care and support they received. We saw staff listening to people, offering choice and giving them time to respond. Staff used a range of different ways to communicate with people to ensure their understanding. People were supported to express their views about the care they received on a daily basis. Feedback was positive and people told us, I’m very well looked after. I can chat to the staff quite happily” and “Staff know me personally. I’ve lived here for a long time. It’s lovely here.” People were supported to maintain relationships that were important to them. For example, staff had arranged video calls with relatives, helped people with letter writing and supported family events and celebrations. People had access to activities and the local community to promote and support their independence, health and wellbeing. Some relatives felt there were less activities for people who lived on the top floor of the service. The service had links with the local nursery, church and memory café. This helped ensure individual needs and preferences could be met. The Registered Manager told us about their plans to implement a ‘household model’, utilising the kitchens on each floor which would enable people to be more involved in meal preparation. Relatives were involved in reviewing and developing care plans when people were not able to do this themselves. They told us these were reviewed when people’s needs changed.

Staff gave us examples of how they offered people choices and maintained people’s dignity during aspects of their care and support. Examples included during personal care, choosing clothes, food and activities. One staff member told us, “We give residents choice and control in anything that they do from the clothes they wear to the food they eat. We focus on them.” Staff told us they were committed to providing high quality care which met people’s individual needs. A member of staff who was not a carer told us, “It’s a lovely home and the staff work hard to look after people.”

Systems and policies were in place to ensure people’s independence was promoted and their rights and choices respected. People's choices and preferences were usually included in care plans. Further improvements were made to care plans following our visit to the service. There was an appropriate range of equipment to support and maximise people’s independence and outcomes at the service.
