Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they could make choices and were supported to be as independent as possible. Their comments included, "Very much [respect my choices] so I have been very impressed" ; "They help me rather than do for me" ; "Oh yes, they are brilliant and encourage me to do all I can and want to do" and "They do support me they encourage me to do things and we have a laugh over it." People and relatives told us staff were caring and kind. They told us, "Very kind and lovely girls, I couldn’t wish for anyone better" and "Very kind and to my husband too, he has Alzheimer's, he laughs with them."

Staff supported people to be as independent as possible and gave us several specific examples of how they did this. A staff member said they encouraged people to be involved while they were preparing breakfast, they suggested "Do you want to put the kettle one, can you get the cups?" Another staff member explained how they supported people when out in the community to make their choices or empowered a person who had issues with their swallowing, "I put the food on the spoon but they used it themselves so [person] keeps their independence."

During this assessment, we found there were appropriate risk assessment and care planning processes to ensure care was assessed and planned around their needs and preferences; this also ensured people were supported to be as independent as possible. The service was supporting people to access the community and be involved in activities that were important to them. During team meetings conversations were held about how to support people to be as independent as possible and to encourage positive risk taking. Care plans were detailed and people's preferences were described. The provider told us they were in the process of implementing a new care planning system to enable additional person centred information to be added and be easily accessible to staff caring for people.
