Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

People and relatives we spoke with told us staff were kind and caring. One person said, “I’m an adult and they treat me like that.” Another person told us they always ‘have fun’ with staff. A further person added jovially, “We’re spoiled rotten really.”

Staff spoke with commitment and passion about their roles. One staff member told us, “Love it here, it’s a job that doesn’t feel like a job.” Staff were unanimous in their views that the best thing about working at Boulevard House was being with the people who lived there. A staff member said, “[People] are great, if they want to try something new we do everything we can to support that.” Another said, “They all get the respect they deserve.”

Partners had no specific feedback on this area.

We saw staff spoke with and about people in a dignified and respectful way and this was reflected in the way people’s care records were written. Staff were careful to maintain people’s privacy when speaking with them about personal matters. We saw how staff took a very caring and compassionate approach with a person who was not feeling well.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

We did not look at Treating people as individuals during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Caring.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they were supported with their independence and had choice and control over their care. People told us they were invited to residents’ meetings where they could raise feedback and discuss ideas. One person said, “Staff are great, they help me every day.” Another said, “[Staff Name] is my key worker, but we swap from time to time, so I get to know all staff, I like that.”

Staff told us they had completed training in Dignity and Respect. Staff told us how they had applied this training to improve people’s experiences. One staff member said, “I’m always conscious of my surroundings and make sure I speak to people in private to keep their dignity.” Another member of staff said, “Its not closed off or restrictive like it was when I first started, [people] have the freedoms they want and everyone respects everyone else; [people] are much happier now.”

We observed staff having meaningful conversations with people and offering choice. Where people required support with communication, we saw staff encouraging people to make decisions and choices in their preferred method. For example, we observed Makaton signs had been displayed on notice boards to support people to learn signs and improve their communication with staff. Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.

Care plans reflected people’s needs and wishes regarding their independence and how they wished to be supported to make choices. People were supported to maintain family links and social contacts that were important to them. Family and friends were encouraged to visit the home without limitations and engage in group activities. Where needed, people were supported to contact relatives and friends with the use of technology such as computers.
