Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

People told us they would benefit from more activities. One person told us, "I think that there could be more activities here." Relatives added, " I feel that the activities could be a lot better" and, "I think there is a need for dementia-friendly activities to support movement and exercises, and more singing for the brain." People's choices were promoted. One person told us, "I can choose my meals. I like potato hash, especially with beetroot and the cheese pie here is good too. I can choose what I want to wear every day." Relatives told us they can visit people as they wished. Comments included, "I can visit whenever I like. I pop in two or three times a week."

Staff supported people to maintain relationships with their relatives. Staff told us, "We liaise with families daily, we have good relationships with them and we support people to engage with their relatives" and, "Relatives are free to visit any time they want." Staff promoted people's independence with their daily living skills. Staff told us, "If people have the ability to do something for themselves, we encourage it as much as possible" and, "A few residents are fairly independent. I encourage them to do things for themselves, such as washing themselves."

We observed staff supporting people and encouraging their independence. For example, we saw staff encouraging people to use their aids to walk. We observed staff offering people choices. For example, we saw staff asking people what drinks they would like. Although choice was offered during meal times and we observed staff asking people what they would like for their lunch, some people could not engage with the questions and would have benefited from more dementia friendly strategies when offering choices. Meaningful activities were not always provided. We observed people taking part in a game of bingo, however most people were withdrawn and could not engage with the game.

Policies and procedures were in place to promote people's independence, choice and control. The service supported people to maintain relationships with their relatives and friends. Relatives could visit at any time and were encouraged to have a meal with the person they visited at meal times. The service employed an activity co-ordinator who facilitated activities 4 days a week. We were told care staff supported with activities daily when the activity co-ordinator was not in, however, there were not records made in people's activity logs to confirm this. We fed this back to the provider who told us they would be sourcing cover for activities 7 days a week.
