There were enough staff who were skilled to provide care and support. Information about people’s needs was in place to ensure they could safely access other services.

People and their relatives told us staff worked to keep them safe and were aware of their needs before coming to support them. Continuity of care supported the management of risk; the registered manager told us this was important to ensure staff knew people well. People felt confident when being supported by staff. One person told us about the information they had in their home to help keep them safe and said, “We do have a load of paperwork from them that’s here if I need it but I’m not worried, they are fantastic, they are very, very good.”

Staff told us they had enough information about people’s risks and detailed some of the risks and how people preferred to be supported. Staff were involved in ensuring people received up to date care and support, through ensuring safe practices and ways of working were implemented. A member of staff told us, “We have enough information on the system to help us when supporting people. We can always ask if we need further help.”

People’s risks were assessed before people received a service from Eleanor Nursing and Social Care – Boscombe Office and updated as needed. Risk assessments were created and maintained within the providers electronic care planning system. Risk assessments were updated regularly and when things changed. The electronic care planning system meant updates could be made instantly. Systems to have oversight of risk were in place and an overall service improvement plan captured actions from all aspects of the service. All these measures contributed to the safe management of risk within the service.

Without exception people and their relatives told us they were happy with the staff at Eleanor Nursing and Social Care – Boscombe Office. People were supported by a regular team of staff who knew them well and understood their needs. One person told us, “They [staff] do know how to do everything I’ve had them long enough now, so they do things how I like. I’ve not had any problems, I’m happy with what they do for me, they are all lovely.”

Staff told us they felt supported and received enough training to carry out their role effectively. Staff were grateful and happy for the opportunities presented to them, with regards further and additional training, such as vocational qualifications which were supported by the service. The registered manager told us of the importance of supporting staff and creating one team.

Staff were recruited safely, and recruitment records reflected this. Procedures were in place to ensure the required checks were carried out on staff before they commenced their employment. This included enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for adults. DBS checks provide information including details about convictions and cautions held on the police national computer. The information helps employers make safer recruitment decisions. Training and support were ongoing and there was a planned programme of supervisions, spot checks and appraisals, records showed the conversations were two-way and detailed.
