People's ability to engage and contribute was celebrated by staff and people told us they were encouraged to feel at home in their placements. Staff told us they had regular discussions with people, both formally and informally, to obtain their ongoing feedback. People spoke glowingly about their shared lives carers and how the shared lives officers supporting them, a health and social care professional commented, “The person I supported felt listened too, respected, and very welcome. I have the utmost trust in the team.” People's individual needs were well understood as they were involved in the assessment process and further reviews. The service ensured all people had opportunities to live full lives, this included peer networking and support to access service in their local communities and to reconnect with family and friends. There was a focus on supporting people in their preferred communication and learning style. This meant people were supported to have equal opportunities in life.

The registered manager was pivotal in creating collaborative opportunities by being actively involved in a national campaign for this model of care, stating this was an opportunity to help shape guidance and learn from the experiences of other registered managers to help develop their service. A health and social care professional advised, “Panel members have all had experience of social care, either as a provider or professional in the field. Assessments are almost always very thorough, timely and well presented. Working relationships with the team are excellent.”

The provider had systems in place to ensure people, staff and professional feedback was received. We reviewed the minutes of a recent meeting and a quality audit, which included an assessment of people's experiences and involvement. The provider used this feedback to create a “you said, we did” poster. The service took pride in their care planning process, which were detailed and gave a concise overview of people's preferences in each area of support needed, this embedded people expressing their voice in designing care. In addition, people felt included, and had an opportunity to be part of an involvement group which supported people to speak up.
