People’s needs were assessed before they moved into the home to ensure these could safely be met. Regular reviews were undertaken to ensure the support people received remained relevant and effective to them. People were encouraged to remain as independent as possible where safe to do so, and there were a range of different activities available to meet people’s needs. Staff had access to information to ensure they could meet people’s assessed needs correctly. The provider had systems in place to ensure management had oversight over people’s needs, especially where changes were needed. Relevant referrals had been made to external professionals to support people to live as healthy a lifestyle as possible.

This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Assessing needs

Score: 3

The provider had systems in place to ensure people's care plans were reviewed regularly and any changes in their needs or care were documented. Quality assurance processes ensured good oversight of this.

Peoples care and treatment was assessed and reviewed, communication needs were considered. Some relatives did express that communication regarding equipment could be improved. This was fed back to the provider who was receptive to this and arranged meetings to discuss any concerns. Another relative told us, "[Person] eats very well, they try and get him to wear his teeth, sometimes he will let them sometimes he says no but it is his choice, and they appreciate that. He has dementia but he can still be involved in decisions, which is important to me.”

Staff fed back that they felt they had access to information about people to enable them to provide effective care and support to meet people’s needs. Care plans and risk assessments had been completed for identified needs. Management carried out reviews of documentation and updates, changes or improvements needed were discussed in handover and in staff meetings. Care documentation was also discussed in one-to-one supervision.

Supporting people to live healthier lives

Score: 3

The home worked well with other health professionals to provide effective support to meet people’s needs. Referrals had been made to speech and language therapy when people had experienced issues related to their nutrition. Wounds had been reported to the district nursing team and GPs had been contacted when people became unwell. The provider had a policy in place to guide staff to support people with engaging in activities which were meaningful to them. The guidance included information on how to encourage people to share their stories and what is important to them so their care can be shaped around this.

Staff were aware of people needs and provided support in a way that met these, whilst supporting and encouraging people’s independence whenever safe to do so. For example, staff told us about one person who liked to walk around downstairs and liked to check who was coming into the building. On a day previously when interviews were taking place, this person was introduced to the person when they arrived and given a chance to meet and chat to them to make them feel involved.

People received support to live healthier lives. People and their relatives spoke positively about the activities and support offered to keep them engaged and happy. One relative said, “Staff are fabulous they let me know if anything I need to know about [person].” Another added, “The entertainment and special events are well thought out and I can see the residents really enjoy themselves. In the summer they had music outside in the garden and a cream tea. At Easter this year they brought in a new lamb for the residents to pet and at Christmas they were delighted by the arrival of a donkey which caused much excitement amongst everyone! Birthdays are recognised and celebrated with cakes, presents, and parties. It's a very sociable place and ensures that all residents are included.”
