Safe
Since our last inspection improvements had been made in regard to infection prevention and control and managing risks. Risks associated with people’s care and support had been identified and managed safely. Staff knew people well and spoke confidently about how risks were managed. Staff were caring and compassionate in their interactions with people. The environment was clean and infection prevention and control measures promoted people's safety. People received their medicines as prescribed by staff who were trained and competent to do so.

Involving people to manage risks
People told us they were involved in decisions about their care and told us staff knew them well. One person said, “I use the hoist, they [staff] have to, I feel safe because they explain what they are doing.”
The management team told us care plans and risk assessments had been re-written to ensure they were current and informative. At our last inspection staff were unsure on how to use the newly introduced electronic care planning system. At this assessment staff told us they were more confident, and they felt they had the appropriate training and knowledge to ensure they kept documentation up to date.
We observed staff supporting people safely when assisting people to transfer using equipment such as hoists. Staff explained the process to people and ensured they were comfortable. One person was assisted in a caring way to locate their walking stick.
We reviewed 3 care plans and supporting documentation and found risks associated with people’s care were documented well. This provided staff with clear guidance.

Infection prevention and control
People and their relatives told us the home was clean and tidy. One person told us how staff kept their room clean. One relative said, “[Relatives] room is always spotless when I visit, in fact the home is.”
The manager told us their daily walk round included checking on cleanliness and infection prevention and control practices. One staff member said, “The cleanliness of the home has improved, and we have clear guidance from the manager.”
The home was clean, tidy and there were had no malodours. Staff used PPE appropriately and washed hands following the removal of gloves etc. The laundry was tidy and clean. Bathrooms, shower rooms and toilets were all clean and fresh. We observed lunch being served in the main dining room downstairs and found staff worn appropriate PPE. PPE station was available in the dining room and at several intervals throughout the home.
Systems and processes in place ensured infection, prevention and control were managed safely. The manager carried out a daily walk round and checked the cleanliness of the home as part of this. Any concerns were identified and actioned promptly. Cleaning schedules were in place and staff adhered to them.
Medicines optimisation
People told us they received their medicines as prescribed and were confident staff understood safe practices. One person said, “Yes, I do get my medicines I couldn't do without them.” Staff administering medicines wore a red tabard indicating they were administrating medicines and not to be disturbed.
Staff and leaders had a good knowledge of medicine management procedures within the home. Staff told us they received training in the safe handling of medicines and their competencies were checked on a regular basis.
Medicines were predominantly managed in a safe way and people received their medication safely and as prescribed. The manager had introduced effective systems to audit medicine management, and any issues identified were actioned appropriately. However, during our inspection we identified 2 topical creams which had illegible labels. We raised this with the manager who took action to address this.
