Freedom to speak up

Score: 3

All of the staff we spoke with, without exception told us they felt they could raise things and speak up when needed. One member of staff said “I would 100% raise any issues. This place is for the residents and I make sure they are supported.” Another member of staff told us "I have raised a concern and it was dealt with by the manager. I can't remember the specific details but I felt comfortable to raise my concerns. The managers always reiterate to me that if I feel worried I can speak with them."

There were processes in place to ensure staff had the freedom and autonomy to speak up when needed. We saw there was a whistle blowing policy in place which clearly described the escalation process if staff felt they needed to raise any concerns. There was an open door procedure at the home were staff could speak to the registered manager anytime. We also saw feedback was gathered from staff and any suggestions were acted upon by the registered manager. Staff were also encouraged during team meetings and daily catch ups to share any issues or concerns.

There was a robust and comprehensive approach to auditing within the organisation. We saw audits completed internally by the registered manager every month, which would identify some missing information and generate action plans. There was also an auditing tool completed by the regional manager every few months which took into account the audits of the registered manager, the completed actions, and sampled other audits and experiences, such as the dining experience, within the home.
